A Good Year for the World Series of Poker and its Poker Players

On July 9th, 2008, the 2008 World Series of Poker series in the history of the event, surpassing last year's record of 4,432 participants, with 52,720 entries received. It also surpassed last year's total cash pool of $20,880,030, with $180,676,248 won or will soon be won by players on the main event in the Series' fifty-five day poker events.

The main event of the 2008 WSOP possess the 2nd biggest cash pool and second biggest player field in history. Its $64,333,600 cash pool and 6,844 participants are only second to 2006 WSOP Main Event, which featured a cash pool of $82,512,162 produced by 8,773 participants. Another historic event was the number of participants from outside of the United States.

This year, around 118 different countries were represented, up from eighty-seven last year, fifty-four in 2006, forty-one in 2005 and twenty-four in 2004. Players from around sixty countries cashed in the event. The 2nd poker event this summer, a $1,500 no limit poker holdem event, attracted the most number of players of any poker events in history, excluding the World Series of Poker main events. Around 3,929 players participated in the event.
