Jake Cody Wins the European Poker Tour Deauville

Jake Cody managed to outwit Mike "Timex" McDonald and Peter Eastgate to win the PokerStars.com EPT Deauville on January 25th, 2010. Cody, a 21 year-old poker player from Rochdale, U.K., outwitted a field of 768 players to claim the 1st place cash prize of 847,000 euros.

Tournament organizers had a lot of interesting story lines with McDonald looking to become the first two-time European Poker Tour winner and Eastgate trying to win his first major poker tournament since winning the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event. Eastgate, a member of Team PokerStars Pro, entered the eight-player final table as the short-stack and could not get anything started.

It did not take long before Eastgate went home in 8th place after his pocket tens were defeated by K-nine. The Danish poker pro has never won an EPT title although he came close winning one in London this year, eventually finishing in 2nd place behind Aaron Gustavson. McDonald entered the final table with an average chip stack and made it to the three-handed play.

Unfortunately, McDonald ran into trouble at that point and lost a flip to go home with 295,000 euros for his efforts. McDonald won the European Poker Tour Dortmund in 2008 and nearly won it again in 2009 but eventually finished in 5th place. Despite the fact that it was Jake Cody's first time participating at the EPT, it took him less than an hour to defeat heads-up opponent Teodor Caraba.

It was a disappointing tournament for French poker fans that saw a number of their players fall short of the final table. Most notably was Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, who finished in 9th place after running into pocket aces with his ace-queen.

Winamax Pro and actress Alexia Portal finished in 10th place after losing a flip for her tournament life. French poker pro Bruno Fittousi, who finished as the runner up in the World Series of Poker H.O.R.S.E. in 2007, finished in 14th place in EPT Deauville. With the conclusion of EPT Deauville, the tour will head next to Copenhagen for the Scandinavian Open, scheduled to take place on February 16th, 2010-February 21st, 2010.
