On December 26th, 2007, David Pham, also known as the Dragon, won the Card Player Media Poker Player of the Year honor by winning the No Limit Hold'Em event eight poker tournament at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic on December 5th, 2007. Pham won more than $279,000. The Player of the Year award of Card Player, which was first offered in 1997, is one of the most revered and oldest poker ranking systems on the circuit.
Past awardees included Daniel Negreanu, Michael Mizrachi and Men Nguyen. Pham is a two time Player of the Year awardee, also having won the honor on 2000. He joins Men Nguyen with four and T.J. Cloutier with two Player of the Year citations. Pham became the leader in August and remained in the spot for the rest of the year.
Phan finished the year with 6,562 points, 814 points ahead of second place player J.C. Tran. Pham have taken home some cash in poker events eighteen times in 2007, making the final table of tournaments eleven times. Pham also won four poker events like the $5,000 heads-up event at the Mirage Poker Showdown. He also won two poker events in the Winnin O' the Green tournament series with buy-in costs of $500 and $1,000.
He won a total of $1.8 million playing in poker games in 2007. The Player of the Year was made in 1997 to recognized outstanding poker players according the Barry Shulman, the Card Player Media COO.
