On October 24th, 2008, Players living in the South Bay area is abuzz with the slew of brand new tournaments at the Garden City Casino is San Jose. Some of the events are offered towards night owls and do not even begin until 12:40 a.m., 4 days a week. Others are labeled as deep-stack events, meaning that players accept additional chips for a minimum buy-in, giving more ammunition to the player to use over the course of the event. The late night events are the newest offering in the area.
Tournament Director Jesse Rodgers says that the casino instituted them over the summer in a move to attract a younger set of players. He said that so far, interest in the games has been substantial-around forty to fifty players show up everyday to compete. Rodgers said that the night-owl events are becoming like church socials because there are at least one hundred guys who will play 2 to three nights every week, so everybody gets to know each other. Croupiers mixed up the cards in the air at 12:40 a.m. during Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday mornings.
Buy-in cost is at $120 and participants receive a total of $4,000 in chips. The events usually lasts until 3:30 a.m. or 4:00 a.m. The winner takes home $1,500 to $2,000 and the top 5 finishers usually take home some money. The deep stack tournaments at Garden City are held during mornings: 10:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9:20 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The buy-in costs are $120 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (for $4,000 in chips), $200 on Friday (for $5,000), $250 on Saturday (for $6,000), and $150 on Sunday and Monday (for $4,000).
Rodgers said that the play in these events is very exciting because participants have larger chip stacks and they can make a lot of strategies and be selective about their play. Rodgers said that having a deep-stack gives skilled participants a better chance to play a good game. Garden City switched to these events because poker enthusiasts were not buying rebuys and add-ons frequently compared in the past. With additional chips that they can play with, participants can strategize and play better.
Payouts differ depending on how participants are playing but during Fridays and Saturdays, 1st place winner can win as much $5,000 to $7,000. Garden City is also transforming these new events into 2 special events. The 1st, to be held on December 7th, 2008 until December 14th, 2008, will be a week of late night events, with buy-ins at $225 per session. The second one, to be held on January 10th, 2009 until January 18th, 2009, will be named the Bankroll Builder event, with a daily buy-in cost of $250. Rodgers says that the daily 1st place winners during these events may win as much as $20,000.
